Bop Shop EventsCANADA DAYBOP ARTS presents HARRIS EISENSTADT AND CANADA DAY For most people Canada Day (aka Fete Du Canada) is held on July 1. This year however, we at the Bop Shop are celebrating Canada Day on October 29. We’re celebrating it on that day by having percussionist Harris Eisenstadt’s new group (oddly enough named Canada Day) perform. Eisenstadt (born in Canada, by the way but a U.S. resident for many years) has led several memorable bands at the Bop Shop. There was the legendary quintet he had with three trumpets: Roy Campbell, Taylor Ho Bynum and Paul Smoker. And there was his trio The Diplomats with trombonist Steve Swell and alto saxophonist Rob Brown who released their performance on the album We Are Not Obstinate Islands. So we always look forward to any new projects Eisenstadt comes up with. Eisenstadt’s latest project is a quintet named Canada Day and has a mix of old and new Bop Shop participants. On trumpet is Nate Wooley who was last seen here in his co-led quartet with fellow trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum. Bassist is Eivind Opsvik who has performed here in the Tone Collectors with Tony Malaby and Jeff Davis and has performed a couple of times at the Rochester International Jazz Festival with his own band and with pianist Kris Davis’ quartet. Saxophonist Matt Bauder who studied at Wesleyan with Anthony Braxton, has been based in Chicago and released Weary Already Of The Way with a group that included cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (last seen here in August with the Vandermark 5), trombonist Jeb Bishop and cornetist Rob Mazurek. Vibraphonist Chris Dingman is also a graduate of Wesleyan University and has studied with Pheroan Ak-Laf, Jay Hoggard and Braxton He’s been based in New York City and has been making a name for himself performing with Tyshawn Sorey, Steve Lehman and Adam Rudolph. This is an exciting new ensemble and they have a record coming out on Clean Feed that should be ready by the performance. This band will sound great in the atrium (vibes always sound special in the space) and this is a performance you shouldn’t miss.
