Bop Shop Atrium
274 N Goodman St. In the Village Gate
Back in February, 2006, we had one of our most memorable concerts at the Bop Shop, the Cuong Vu Trio with bassist Stomu Takeshi and Rochester’s very own Ted Poor on drums. There was a lot of anticipation for this band and that night they took the large crowd that showed up to some pretty amazing musical places. Vu’s trumpet and electronics set up combined with Takeshi’s rumbling bass and electronics created a dense web of sound that seemed to permeate every corner of the atrium. Combined with Vu’s largely melodic compositions and Ted’s dynamic drumming they delivered a vibrant and memorable set that had everyone on their feet cheering. We’ve been wanting them back ever since. Although we announced a show with the Vu-tet last fall, that tour was regrettably cancelled. But now we have a firm date lined up for his most recent quartet.
Trumpeter Cuong Vu started making a name for himself when he moved to New York City in 1994 after graduating from New England Conservatory Of Music. He began playing with many of the most innovative players on the New York scene including pianist Myra Melford, reed player Chris Speed and in trumpeter Dave Douglas’ double trumpet sextet (on the record Sanctuary). He began to gain the attention of more mainstream artist and his talents were soon being tapped by Pat Metheney, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie and Cibo Matto. All along he kept pursuing his own projects releasing five records under his own name, all of which have garnered excellent reviews. His most recent is Vu-tet
For this tour in addition to Vu, Takeshi and Poor, they are adding a second bassist to the lineup, Luke Bergman which should add even more interesting textures. This promises to be an exciting evening of music. Don’t miss this one because Cuong Vu and company will fill the atrium with their innovative and exhilarating music.
