In the 1970s, this British prog rock band was a favorite on the college scene, liberally sprinkling biblical, historical and sexual allusions throughout its lyrics and setting them against a backdrop of powerful mellotron-enhanced orchestrations. While best known as the band that launched the career of Yes’s Rick Wakeman, Strawbs’ haunting sound is the real attraction, the brainchild of gravelly-voiced singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Cousins.
Strawbs disappeared from the U.S. music scene in the 1980s, only to re-emerge in 2003 as a Cousins-led acoustic trio that lured hordes of old and new fans to clubs nationwide, holding audiences spellbound as these veteran rockers stripped down Strawbs' highly-orchestrated masterpieces and re-delivered them in a pure, acoustic simplicity.
The success of the acoustic trio prompted a reunion of Strawbs electric lineup in 2004 and, since that time, the band has successfully toured in both formats throughout the U.S. and Canada, including four very well-received shows in Rochester, both in the acoustic and the electric format. Strawbs have released two CDs of new material since their last appearance here in 2007.
On September 25, Strawbs in their acoustic incarnation stop by Lovin' Cup in Rochester as part of their special 40th Anniversary Celebration tour. Join us as this legendary band looks back to some of their best known masterpieces and looks ahead with music from their latest releases.
